Game Highlights

Hart vs. Burroughs

Hart scored a run in the bottom of the 3rd. After 1 out Matt Valaika still hobbled by a hamstring injury doubled to right. Jake Supowit ran for Valaika. Shane Carlson hit a grounder toward second that was muffed by the 2nd baseman, and Supowit came around to score. With Tyler Fick batting Carlson took 2nd on a passed ball and 3rd on a wild pitch. Fick then walked to put runners on 1st and 3rd. The inning came to a sudden end when Matt Sreden hit a hard liner that the 3rd baseman Brandon Pliss stabbed and stepped on 3rd for a double play. Hart led however on the unearned run 1-0.

Donny Williams took a no hitter into the 4th inning having pitched to the minimum 9 batters thru the first 3 innings. The leadoff batter Kenny McCown walked. Terrell Wong followed with a long double to right center, but Bobby Charnock ran the ball down made a perfect throw to the cutoff man Shane Carlson, who made a perfect relay throw to Matt Sreden to cut down McCown at the plate. Camron Collard singled Wong to 3rd. Miguel Alvarez doubled in Wong. Ian Disiere singled in Collard and then Clayton Williamson doubled in Collard and Alvarez. Pitching coach Ruben Escobar went to the mound and talked with Williams to settle him down. Williams then got a grounder to 3rd and a strikeout to end the inning, but the 5 hits including 3 doubles had Burroughs leading 4-1.

Williams pitched a 3 up 3 down 5th, getting 1 strikeout. He gave up a single to the speedy Miguel Alvarez with 1 out in the 6th. Alvarez had been successful stealing on 12 of 13 attempts so far in 2005, and Hart needed to keep him and the score close, still losing 4-1. After many pick off attempts at first he got a flyout, and then on a pitchout got Alvarez on a perfect throw by Matt Sreden and a picture perfect tag by 2nd baseman Shane Carlson. Meanwhile Hart went out easy in the 4th and 5th innings and came to bat in the bottom of the 6th down 4-1. Tyler Fick walked, and stole 2nd on a hit & run play on a pitch in the dirt. Matt Sreden then singled in Fick. Sreden took 2nd on a slow roller to short and then scored on a line single by Brian Charnock. This made the score 4-3 Burroughs. A bunt attempt was popped up, and Ryan Pettersen pinch hit for Jenzen Torres and singled to center but the rally came to an end on an easy grounder to 1st.

In the 7th things really got exciting. Hart was hoping to hold Burroughs to the 4-3 score to get a chance for the win. First up was Clayton Williamson. Donny Williams who had already hit 9 batters on the 2005 season opened the 7th by hitting his 10th. (The record for Hit Batsman by a Hart pitcher is 12 by J.P. Slauenwhite in 2002). A sacrifice moved Williamson to 2nd. With a 2 ball count on Chris Alvarez pitching coach Ruben Escobar removed Donny Williams for Steve Burton. Burton commenced to walk Alvarez. When he walked the #9 place hitter Brandon Pliss, the bases were loaded with only 1 out. Burton then proceeded to get a called strike 3 on both Kenny McCown and Terrell Wong on 3-2 counts.

Hart had escaped but still trailed 4-3. Ian Disiere who Hart beat 7-1 in the rain on March 18 was still pitching the 7th, but when he gave up a leadoff single to Matt Valaika, Burroughs brought in Camaron Collard to try to save the game. Collard immediately threw a wild pitch moving Valaika into scoring position. Shane Carlson layed down a perfect bunt and was safe, Valaika taking 3rd. Tyler Fick then hit a sharp single to left center scoring Valaika with the tying run, Carlson went to 3rd. Matt Sreden was then intentionally walked to load the bases as Burroughs was hoping for a play at the plate. There were no outs. Donny Williams took 3 balls, and then Collard got a strike, but then the next pitch was very wide, and Hart had a 5-4 victory as Shane Carlson scored the winning run.

Hart is now 11-6-1 (4-3 in the Foothill League). Hart's next game is Thursday April 21 at Burroughs at 3:15PM
